Up-File ... Upload, Tag, Share,Download, Delete

Well so you have email accounts with 2 gb space. Big Deal!!! Whats the maximum attachment size.. Muhaahahaha..caught you.

With massive mail boxes and meager attachment limits. Huge File transfers are still an issue. With rapidshare and other hosts having their own issues of time limits, bandwith limits and stuff.

Heres a good solution
Up-File, is a file upload and share utility that allows you to transfer as good as 1GB of file. Well wats more is it will give you a download link and a delete link, to allow you to pass the download links to your friends and then delete it at convenience. It also allows you to email your uploaded file info to your friends so that you dont have to go thru the hassles of email your friends on putting it on th IM.

It also features file tagging so that you can easily browse thru the files that you are interested in and shared by other users. It also features web hosting, but something it is not known for.

Anyways its a good utility to have a look at.

Possible threat over Windows vista

clipped from news.softpedia.com
Windows Vista is wide open to remote code execution via a flaw in Windows Mail. Designed as a successor to Outlook Express, the free email client is an integer part of Windows Vista, shipping

by default with the operating system. On March 23 2007, a client-side vulnerability allowing for remote code execution in Windows Mail was published on Full Disclosure. The report claims that the vulnerability was successfully tested on a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate.

Microsoft did not confirm the validity of the vulnerability, but it did acknowledge the fact that it is investigating the issue.

“Remote Code Execution is possible if a user clicks on a malicious prepared link. Vistas Mail Client will execute any executable file if a folder exists with the same name.
There is for example a CMD script by default in C:WindowsSystem32 named winrm.cmd (and also a folder named winrm inside System32),” Full Disclosure informed.

Opensource meets academics

I found this really cool link which talked about opensource utilities that were used by students in their acedemics which are really comprehensive as compared to their branded fellows. Do have a look at them.

Link Courtesy: http://www.unico-arts.de/

The following programs are some of the most common used by college students and their OSS alternatives or equivalents.

    1. Open Office---instead of Microsoft office, this alone could save you $200-300. And Open Office has equal if not better features, including a word processor, spreadsheet, multimedia presentation, drawing, database and more.
    2. Scribus--This desktop publisher can create documents such as term papers, research papers and more, for much less than Quark Xpress which costs $749.
    3. Maxima--Chances are you'll need some type of math software and for higher math and algebra, and why pay for Mathsoft when Maxima is free?
    4. BRL-CAD--If you are in an engineering or technical field, you know what TurboCad costs. This software developed by the US military Ballistics Research Laboratory, will cost you nothing.
    5. ClamWin--Developed to work with Windows, this antivirus program includes automatic downloads and programmable scanning, just like Norton Antivirus which costs $70
    6. Gimp--For GNU Image Manipulation Program, this program or its newer brother Gimpshop can equal Photoshop which retails at $650.
    7. SciCraft--For statistics and data analysis, this software rivals SPSS.
    8. Kompozer--Built on Nvu, this newer version can provide web design features like Dreamweaver which costs $400.
    9. Banshee--For your music needs, instead of iTunes, why not check out this software with iPod synchronization as well as music players, burners and playlist features?
    10. Mozilla Seamonkey--Instead of Outlook, this software is an email service and internet browser with Chatzilla features. And you've got to love the name! Now that you know OSS is available, the choices are endless. There are literally hundreds of software programs out there for free or minimal costs. There is even a compilation called "Software for Starving Students" that includes over 40 programs, including games. This software is available for Mac OS X or Windows and includes OpenOffice and Firefox.

Apple TV Launched

"Apple made its biggest move yet into the living room on Wednesday by starting shipments of the Apple TV box, a gizmo that lets people take music, photos, and video stored on your computer and play them on a television screen

The samll siver box with a white Apple Logo costs 200 dollars and boars of a 40GB Harddisk that can store upto 50 hours of video, 9000 songs and 25000 photos. A remote control lets users watch movies or TV shows bought from Apples itunes store, view photo slide shows or listen to music.

One of the chief complaints is that Apple TV does not -atleast for now - record TV shows."

Google Phone - All but a rumour?

clipped from news.com.com
March 22, 2007 4:32 PM PDT

Despite all the rumors and speculation about a Google Phone, the Web search company is working on software to run services on mobile phones rather than building its own phone, Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray says.

The head of Google in Spain and Portugal confirmed last week that Google is working on a mobile phone, but she gave no details. Google spokespeople in the U.S have refused to provide further comment, except to say: "Mobile is an important area for Google and we remain focused on creating applications and establishing and growing partnerships with industry leaders to develop innovative services for users worldwide. However, we have nothing further to announce."

There have been reports that the Google Phone would be a Blackberry-like device and that Google was partnering with Samsung, and other reports that Google was in talks with France Telecom Group's mobile-telephony division Orange.

SightSpeed 6.0 - Internet Video Calling

clipped from www.pcmag.com
SightSpeed 6.0
With full-motion video at 30 frames per second, SightSpeed offers the best free Internet video calls around. Version 6.0 also adds an improved interface as well as some new features, such as the ability for Pro users to record a video call locally.
Excellent video quality. Unlimited free video calls to other SightSpeed users. Windows and Mac support. Low-cost calls to traditional landline phones. Voice-only calling mode.
Chat features are not as full-bodied as those of dedicated IM programs.

Version 6.0 further cements SightSpeed's position as the top provider of free Internet video calling. This release features some subtle but noticeable changes to video quality, Windows and Mac compatibility, and a new, streamlined interface. Under the hood, it boasts totally revised code, which is now fully SIP-based. These improvements to SightSpeed's already excellent service are more than enough to garner the app an Editors' Choice.

Google Maps for Mobile

clipped from www.pcmag.com

Internet heavyweight Google has offered powerful mobile services for some time now. Even so, the new Google Maps for Mobile takes things a step further. If you have a Palm OS or Windows Mobile smartphone, Google Maps for Mobile gives you most of the functionality of the desktop version. Although it runs on your handset instead of a desktop Web browser, it's an exceedingly versatile and useful application.

At Google's site, you can download and install either version directly onto your handheld. On a basic level, Google Maps for Mobile lets you view detailed road and satellite maps. Once you input the desired location, you can zoom in by pressing your phone's center control pad button, or zoom out again by hitting the Zoom Out soft button (at least on a Windows Mobile handheld; see below). One nice touch is that you can jump several zoom levels in one shot simply by pressing either button multiple times in fast succession

Viacom sues Google over video clips on its YouTube site

clipped from www.iht.com
Viacom has feuded publicly with YouTube and its parent Google about the unauthorized posting of its programming online.

Since it bought YouTube last October, Google has been chasing deals that would give it the right to put mainstream video programming on the site. Just a few weeks ago, Google's chief executive, Eric E. Schmidt, seemed confident that this courtship of old-line media companies would prove fruitful.

"These things take time," Schmidt said in an interview. "There is lots and lots of talking and we have not hit any walls."

Now Google has hit a wall.

Viacom, the parent company of MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, filed a wide-ranging lawsuit against Google on Tuesday, accusing it of "massive copyright infringement." Viacom said it was seeking more than $1 billion in damages and an injunction prohibiting Google and YouTube from committing further infringement.

Guerilla Mail

Ever wanted to have email address that would expire in say 15 minutes. (A good idea to control spam if you think about it , well also to increase them on the contrary but lets be positive.)

Guerrilla mail gives you the option to do that. It provides you with a temporary email address which you can cannot select by the way. its a random email box that is given to you.

The lifetime of this mail box is 15 minutes. You can view the emails you recieve within this 15 minutes, needless to say you can also send them. After the above span, the account destroys itself and is as good as it never existed. Whats more, this address will never be generated again for anyone else!

YouTube banned in Turkey

A holding page on YouTube informs users in Turkey that

A holding page on YouTube informs users in Turkey that "Access to this site has been denied by court order!"

A court in Istanbul has issued an order denying access to the video-sharing
website YouTube. The state owned Turk Telecom implemented the ban today
after an escalating dispute between Greek and Turkish users of the site.

The court order was issued yesterday and most internet users logging onto the

Macs 8 core Macs arriving soon!

clipped from www.gadgetell.com

Black iMacs, 8 core Macs coming next month?

blackimac.jpgAccording to MacScoop, Apple’s got “tons of Mac hardware releases for Q2″ due out next month. Sources tell them we should be expecting a black 24-inch iMac and 8-core Mac Pros. Now, we can’t vounch for the rumors, but a black iMac would definately go along with Apple’s strategy. In fact, they’ll probably introduce the black iMac and charge a $100 premium for it… you know, because they had to use all of that black paint and stuff. We’ll keep you updated as the rumor mill gets started back up moving into the second quarter.

Yugma, Free Web Conferencing

For all the people who are into web conferencing, this tool may not be new, but just moving out of its Beta, this little baby has great things to offer.

Yugma, is all about web conferencing and the best part is that its free, forever. Yugma offers you a great deal of options when it comes to web conferencing.

You can choose to have a one to many conference or a many to many conference.
One to many allows you to make a presentation like a broadcast, handy when you want to make those sales presentations, training, etc.

Many to many option allows you to share desktops, like in a meeting. The host can setup multiple clients and then assign control to one of those as and when required.
This lil baby also integrates well with your skype accounts which you can use for voice conferencing.

You just need to go to www.yugma.com and download the installer on to your machine. Once that is done all you need to do is start a session and then share the session id to all those who you want to join the session.

After joining the session everything is just intuitive and easy to work around with the control pretty much like a messenger. People who have dealt with net meeting will rather work around easily.

It has truck loads of features which can be explored after you install the machine. So do review it today and do suggest your comments.

Quoting from what the website says about its product
"
What is Yugma?

Yugma is a free web conferencing service that enables people to instantly connect over the internet and to collaborate using any application or software, using both Windows and Mac. Businesses can connect on-demand and real-time with clients, prospects or employees whether they are across the city, nation or even the globe.

Popular uses include presenting sales proposals, product demonstrations, conducting training, project management, customer service, team reviews, remote support and troubleshooting, and collaboration by web communities such as Skype, Jotspot and Salesforce.com.

Yugma is reliable and secure; adapting to organizational security models like AD or LDAP.

The name Yugma is a word from the Sanskrit language meaning "the state of being in unified collaboration." Yugma, Inc. is a privately held venture-backed company headquartered in Minnesota, USA and has offices in Minneapolis and India."

Happy Holi!

Ragatech and Jhamkudi wishes all its readers a very Happy Holi!
May the festival of colours fill your life with all its colours and bring joy and success to you all!

For the readers that are not from India, probably do not know about the festival.

Holi - The festival of Colours!
Holi, a festival based in India, is celebrated with great fun all over the country. The festival depicts unity in diversity, appropriately signifying the unity that the country is known for.

On this auspicious day, Indians light a big fire, and then apply a colours to each other as a token of their affection to the other.

Lets all unite on this special day against the vices in the world and make this world a better place to live on.

UltraPatient? Crack Vista!

The news has finally arrived, with Microsoft claiming high regards for its new Vista activation feature, this news has sure been a surprise.

With not yet again, people desperate to prove Microsoft wrong, a user proved Vista activation was vulnerable to Brute Force Attacks.
As quoted by PC world magazine
"
A user can apparently crack Windows Vista's activation process by applying brute force to come up with valid product keys"
The news caught fire when a website posted a tool yesterday, which actually claimed to work. However its not so easy as it seems. It did apply BruteForce which they claim to extend to billions of years...umm yeah you heard it right (I wonder if nyone would be using it dat long hehehe), even after validating 20000 keys an hour.

So What does Microsoft say about it?
Microsoft's Kochis also downplayed the threat. "Our product activation servers perform a more rigorous analysis of the keys that are sent up for activation than the local key logic does," he said. "Producing keys that will ultimately activate is less likely than just hitting upon one that will pass the local logic."

Philips Photonic Textile.

Now that is what you call Technology, and that is why its on Ragatech ;)

Will BitTorrents Legit Stand withhold its Users?

With BitTorrent Announcing its legit stand on media, the idea seems quite a fair one. However, with all the assumptions that BitTorrent makes about their forecasts really makes you think otherwise.

Boasting of about 4500 plus titles on their list and with major tie ups with 20th CenturyFox, Lions Gate, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. HomeEntertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios,Inc. (MGM) their library sure seems to rock. Some of these films are even pre-DVD release as according to an article.
That just makes BitTorrent a great resource for legal content.

So whats the Big Issue
Well, BitTorrent talks of 1.5 hundered million users (approx.) who have actually installed the software onto their machines. But, these users primarily uses the p2p for illegitimate content forwarding and how many of those would be willing to go legit and pay for these is still a question

So will the big gamble pay off? I guess its just a matter of time we found out.

The Philips Drag and Draw Technology

Lo Behold! Do not stop your kids from scribbling the walls with colours. Well..umm only if you have the Drag and Draw technology in place. The innovative technology empowers you to draw with light on any wall, in multiple colours that you can even mix. With an inbuilt system and projection mechanism, it also adds a good animation and background to support your drawing.

its definitely worth giving a look!
