Paying for Customer Care - Indian Telco's New Route to Revenue ethical?

If you have noticed, Airtel, a top Telco in India, has started charging its Customers for Customer care calls at the rate of 50p/3 minutes, a service which used to be free of charge.

Although this will definitely generate a lot of revenue (given that Airtel has significantly more than 110M subscribers) is it really ethical for a Telco to charge its Consumers. It may be perfectly legal but would it be ethical?

One may say that its perfectly ok to do say just like we purchase a product and we pay if it gets faulty.

To understand the question we need to understand the differentiation between a Product purchase and a Service purchase.

When you buy a product, you purchase the product accepting that it being a physical entity, will deteriorate in functionality and eventually need servicing or repair. Customer accepts the
liability that the amount he is paying to purchase is the price of the product.

Now consider that you buy a Guaranteed/Warranted Product for say 5 years. In this case you are buying the product and also a invisible service that, all damages (covered in the warranty) will be replaced or fixed at no cost to the customer. Do you pay for warranted products that get defective under its warranty? No.

Similar to the above, Telcos are predominantly service sellers. When you purchase a Billing Plan for example to make calls, it becomes a liability of Provider to allow you to make calls at all times. In simple terms, the Service Provider is liable for the availability of the service where as a Consumer is only liable to pay for the consumption of such a service. (unless there is a contractual maintenance charge)

It is very unethical and perhaps should be illegal to charge your customers to report issues arising due to failure of the Service provider to make a service available.

I shall share a simple experience I had that led me to writing this post.

I am an avid GPRS user, and when I saw that airtel is providing 2GB internet bandwidth for a measly rental of Rs. 99 per month, I immediately wanted to activate the service.

The website was very elaborate on providing information on how to activate the service. I did all the steps, recieved a confirmation SMS twice that the service is now active.

I then started to use my GPRS leisurely thinking that I will only be charged 99 for under 2GB bandwidth which is a lot for a mobile phone. I was only shocked to notice that in my bill that followed for that month, there was no rental applied of 99 and was actually charged the precise usage of bandwidth.

Confused i called up the 'Chargeable' customer support, who informed me (after first wasting time probably to get the minutes rolling) that the service is not active at all. I told her the dates on which i recieved the confirmation but the lady said that the service is just not active. Eventually i asked her to activate it and she said it will be done so (i hope).

This entire experience may have cost me Re. 1 and may be a few hundered rupees extra that i may have paid for my leisurely use of GPRS under my understanding that the service is active.

There are 2 Seperate issues here.

I may to a certain extent agree that due to some system issue it service may not have got activated and it is acceptable to me as a consumer (obviously it will leave a bad experience in my head with Airtel)

However, charging me to let them know that they have committed a mistake or their system has erroneously done something is bad, unethical and to me illegal as well.

Re. 1 as an individual does not look much. But think about the volume the Telcos is earning. Even if you assume that an Operator with 100+ million subscribers, has 1% people (which is very low assumption) that have issues regularly and may need customer support.

Also assume to a pessimistic value that your call will indeed be over in 6 minutes or Re. 1. (we all know how long it takes working with the Call Center Executives for Telecom Operators trying to make you wait for ages)

The calculation is

1 Million Consumers(1,000,000) X Re. 1 = 1 Million Rupees per day.

Thats a Massive Revenue of Rs. 30,000,000 (Rs. 30 Million) per month and
Staggering Rs. 360,000,000 (Rs. 360 Million or more than Quarter of a Billion) an year.

Think about it.

All this revenue from a user who only wants to highlight that he is not getting the service he paid for!

The Web 4.0 and onwards!

I have been off the blogging scene with respect to technology for a while. However, I have tried to keep my radar on the web industry.

With all the hue and cry of Web 3.0 opening up out of its cocoon, and is expected to make a huge entry into the web there are too many people out there that are making serious assumptions on the Web 4.0 and onwards which I highly disregard.

To have a background on the issue, lets start with Web 2.0, this came as a cultural shift from how the internet is perceived and used. For what once used to be a publisher to user channel, now became a collaboration between the two. Users now had the power to publish with publishers merely become a means of presenting that information.

Once there were news websites that people read news from, now there are blogs that people write news into to share information.

Once there were encyclopedia websites, now there are "wikis" that allow you to collaboratively add information on topics.

There are many more such examples but the fact is that the focus and power of the Internet was changing hands. For websites that did not interact or collaborate with its users were thrown out. Collaboration is the key to survival in this scenario. Google who has been an excellent example in doing so now becomes the new king of the web. Web 2.0 became a very good means to allow Google to create its supremacy over the web.

In short, such a massive paradigm shift can be very well accepted as "Upgrade of the Internet" and the Web 2.0 term thus justifies.

Web 3.0 now is making rounds in the industry where applications and browsers aim to be more intelligent and adaptive. They will learn as we interact. Once again an acceptable upgrade.

However, anything beyond web 4.0 and onwards would only be a hypothesis based on no facts whatsover.

Web Portals and Companies trying to create an opportunity by marketting themselves as promoters and "innovators" for web 4.0 would only give me a big laugh.

Any innovation on the web cannot be termed as an upgrade to the web. Also the web scene in the world is so rapidly changing. It would be an idiotic act to drive the future upgrades on the basis of assumptions.

It is evident that all the web upgrades till now (2.0 and 3.0) have brought a paradigm shift to the web bringing in new players. They all originated by a gradual process that progressed on an ongoing basis and not a well planned strategy. Also, such things can never be a outcome of a planned strategy.

Concluding, the web is a vast expanse, and it has grown by its own and shown opportunities at the right time. For all those who are claiming to bring a big change in Web 10.0, please dont bother the world!

I was wandering around the web (the usual me that is), and I was looking for a place somewhere in the United States. I need a map for the very same reason and what better could it be than Google maps. However, I tried to search a little bit more and I found this interesting website.

What is really interesting about this map is, that it is personalized specifically to you.

Lets say one day you wanna mark all the places in the world to which ur somehow associated.
All you do is go to yourgmap, register, mark all the places on the map where u are related, say your college, your home, your school,etc and then publish your map.

Google Patents

These days I am working on a concept for the Retail Industry. Although the concept is still far ahead of its time and currently not acceptable wrt to the funding and infrastructure it needs. However, was trying to make a presentation on it and was to make a patent application for the same once the concept matured.

However, I did not know about the patents already registered associated in the periphery of my concept, as the concept assumed a lot of things.
This is where Google Patents helped me a lot.
I was not only able to find the exact assumed patents I needed for my Citations but also it gave me a lot more information about the patents and their respective authors.

I would definitely want to recommend this for a try and u will love it for sure

Amazingly, he has come up with another application that is a gem and addictive if you are a person on the move and use google docs extensively.

Their efforts to replicate the Office 2007 is quite commendable and they seem to have done more than justice to this baby.

With bandwith not a every man's luxury as yet, it can be quite taxing for the dialup buddies but if have the bandwith, this is one thing u should definitely get the hang of.

Well, responding to Sabeer's claims of getting the better of google docs, he does the the weapon, but we will have to wait to see if does anydamage to a well established and an all integrated solution.

He aims to cross a Billion users soon enough, All the best buddy! With a concept like this, he sure has got the wheels moving

This design was made entirely out of post-its. To increase the resolution of the drawing, I ended up cutting the post-its in 16 pieces. Putting everything up on the wall took about 11 hours.

It took 3 days, so we had to post this at night to keep the cleaning crew from undoing our work

Google has announced a new Ajax Feed API makes it possible to extract information from multiple RSS feeds with only a few simple lines of JavaScript. The API—which allows web developers to retrieve RSS data as either XML or JSON—can be used to build mashups, unique web applications that leverage multiple sources of data and display the results in a useful or innovative manner.

Google's Feed API allows developers to circumvent the same-origin policy—a security mechanism designed to prevent JavaScript code from accessing content associated with a web page from a different domain—without having to manually implement complex server-side proxy mechanisms. The Feed API transparently leverages Google's server-side FeedFetcher, the RSS capture and cache mechanism used by Google Reader.

In order to use the Google Feed API, developers will need to sign up for a special API key that is tied to a specific URL. For instance, if a developer registers a key for http://mysite.com/mydirectory, that key can only be used in pages that are in that directory or its subdirectories. Developers will have to register additional keys for web pages that are stored in other directories or domains.

In my own experimentation with the Google Feed API, I found the performance satisfactory. I initially had some trouble getting the API to retrieve more than four elements at a time, until some developers at Google pointed out that I was neglecting to use the setNumEntries method to increase the maximum number of items. After fixing my test code, I had no problems using the Feed API to retrieve XML and JSON. The Google Feed API is a useful and effective tool for client-side Web 2.0 application development, but the key registration limitations seem like an inconvenience that could hinder adoption.

Google is adding another tool in its battle with Microsoft: A free version of presentation software.

The yet-to-be-named software will be included in Google Apps, an online suite that includes free word processing, spreadsheet and calendar programs. Users will work with the program online but will be able to save files and view them offline. It's expected to be available this summer.

Microsoft's PowerPoint, part of the Office suite, is one of the most-used applications for office meetings. Companies pay upward of $300 yearly for Office licenses, making it one of Microsoft's most lucrative franchises.

At the Web 2.0 Expo conference in San Francisco, Google CEO Eric Schmidt denied, as he has in the past, that the online tools are aimed at luring people away from Microsoft.

"We believe we can bring presentations to a new level of user satisfaction," he said. "We don't think it competes with Microsoft, because it doesn't have all the functionality of Office. It's a different way of sharing information, more casual, and a better fit to how people use the Web."

Mike McGuire, an analyst at researcher Gartner, doesn't buy it. He says "it's getting harder to take comments like that at face value. Of course Google is taking on Microsoft. Microsoft has lots to worry about."

McGuire doesn't think Microsoft's large base of corporate clients will immediately abandon Office, "but for individuals, Google is offering a strong, free alternative and people will look at it very seriously."

Google announced a deal Friday to buy online ad firm DoubleClick for $3.1 billion, which Microsoft contends violates antitrust rules. The deal is Google's biggest ever, following its $1.6 billion acquisition of video-sharing site YouTube last year.

On Monday, Google announced an alliance with radio broadcaster Clear Channel that lets users of Google's online advertising network buy radio ads directly from their computer.

Schmidt said he is delighted at having YouTube in the Google family, despite controversy over unauthorized video clips showing up on the service. Viacom has filed a $1 billion copyright infringement suit against Google. On Tuesday, Schmidt said he thinks the company is just "negotiating" to get a settlement. He said Google will soon introduce a tool to take down unauthorized clips automatically, "which will make all of this moot."

Attribute nightmare in IE

I've had this article in mind for a while, as I have fiddling with Internet Explorer's crazy handling of attributes in order to patch Prototype's $$() utility.

Well, fiddling wasn't cutting the deal, so I ended up doing some large scale testing (basically running thousands of test using a sample HTML 4.01 document from W3C) to try to figure out what was going on.

element.foo === element.getAttribute('foo')

Obviously, that is a completely broken implementation, as getAttribute('foo') is supposed to return the attribute as set in the document, not the corresponding DOM element's attribute.

To exemplify:

// -> "http://tobielangel.com/index.html" in IE
// -> "/index.html" in well behaved browsers

If you read Internet Explorer's online documentation, you'll notice that it's implementation of getAttribute() is a bit particular, as it takes a second optional argument called an iFlag.

Let’s say hypothetically that I’m sitting at work in the greater Des Moines, Iowa area and I want to pick up a delicious pizza from Papa Murphy’s on my way home from work. Unfortunately, though, I can’t call out from work to non-business numbers, though I can receive phone calls. Ah-ha! I go to Google Maps, type in “Papa Murphys West Des Moines IA and see the following:

See the “call” link I have circled in red? If you click that link, you’ll be asked to enter your telephone number. As soon as you click submit, your telephone will ring. Pick it up, wait a few seconds, and you’re connected for free to the business. No charges to you at all, and no outgoing call charges. This is spectacularly useful if you have any sort of long distance charges or if you have outgoing call charges on your telephone, whether it be a land line or a cellular phone.

What’s the drawback? So far, I haven’t found a drawback - it’s not always useful, but quite often it can save me some cash.

Windows v/s Linux

It's really hard to miss how Linux and Windows are relatively judged in the tech blogosphere. Consider the following attributes and their praise or criticism, completely based on what operating system they happen to accompany:

1. A free graphics program bundled with the system.
(a) On Windows: Cool! A free paint program! Hey, everybody, check out this awesome pixel-art I did!
(b) On Linux: The interface is completely wrong! It needs to be just like Photoshop!

2. The system has a command line.
(a) On Linux: It's this archaic dependency on outdated interfaces that is holding Linux back.
(b) On Windows: The new Windows Power Shell innovation is a bold leap forward that gives Windows more power! Order your copy for $100 today!

3. The system search feature.
(a) On Windows: It's easy, all you do is type "command line folder:interactions type:doc myfile" to quickly locate your file!
(b) On Linux: This is just the problem with the command line I'm talking about! "Locate myfile" will never be something the average person can remember to type in.

4. Lots of distros.
(a) On Linux: The lack of standardization is a huge stumble. Having too many choices is confusing for the end user. Even if it were narrowed down to just Ubuntu and Kubuntu, that's still too many.
(b) On Windows: The Vista editions run to Home Premium, Home Basic, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate, or you can stay with XP or 2000, and even NT and Me and 98 SE are still out there. Giving a consumer their choice is what makes capitalism work!

5. Charity.
(a) On Windows: Gates gives away a portion of income to charity, so I know I'm doing something good for the community just by buying Windows.
(b) On Linux: The whole damned operating system is free in the first place so you can donate your own money how you want? Well, then, that just goes to show that they're all anti-establishment hippies, doesn't it?

6. Support.
(a) On Linux: Nobody knows it, nobody understands it, it's too difficult to learn.
(b) On Windows: Anybody with a copy of "Windows for Dummies", an MSCE certificate, and a paid-up per-incident MS Live support account can administer this baby.

7. User education.
(a) On Windows: Sure I had to re-learn how to do everything going from Word 2003 to Word 2007, but it's worth it for all the extra features and improvements in it.
(b) On Linux: It doesn't work just like Windows! Waaaahhhhhhh!

8. Tabbed Browsing.
(a) On Linux: Yeah, yeah, so Firefox has tabs. Can somebody get the fanboi out of here, please?
(b) On Windows: The IE 7 tab feature is a Microsoft innovation that changed my life forever.

9. Daylight Savings Time.
(a) On Windows: The heroic efforts of the developers and system administrators to apply all the patches in time was a touching moment in IT teamwork.
(b) On Linux: Yeah, yeah, so the system automatically corrected itself while you slept! Can somebody get the fanboi out of here, please?

10. Cost.
(a) On Linux: Mysteriously, the fact that the software is free somehow causes training and support costs to be 100x as much as for Windows, wherever it's reported.
(b) On Windows: Mysteriously, the additional cost for installing each piece of commercial software, having to upgrade hardware, lost productivity due to downtime, buying an anti-virus program, and taking the box to the shop every two weeks to clean it out is never mentioned anywhere.

UPDATE: A comment in the Ubuntu forums linking here does mention that the Daylight Savings Time change did have some glitches on some systems. All I can say is that my 3 installed Linux boxen (Slackware, grml, and Damn Small) handled the change nicely (I keep them updated). But then I just have a home set-up, not an enterprise-class network.

Another desperate guys attempt to prove why linux can never overtake Windows

"Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?

That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

You can make Firefox perform up to 40% faster for page transfers. With just a few clicks and some typing, you can experience faster browsing and surfing Firefox.

1. Open the Firefox “config” page: click into the Firefox address location bar, and type about:config , press Enter.

2. The “Config” file will appear in the Firefox browser as a page with hundreds of lines of code in it. Now, we start by enabling some advanced tabbed options:

3. Locate the line browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs . (tip: press “b” on your keyboard to quick scroll).

4. Double click on browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs . This will set its toggle to “true”. Now your advanced and enhanced tabbing should be set.

5. Next: we will increase the “pipeline” RAM ability for Firefox to accomodate more packet transfer. In the same config document, scroll down to the line that says network.http.pipelining . Double click this line to set it to “true”.

6. Lastly, we will increase the maximum pipeline requests to 100. Find the line that says network.http.pipelining.maxrequests . Double click on it, and a dialog box will pop up. Change the setting from 4 to 100.

7. No need to save this file. Simply close and restart Firefox, and you should see an immediate 10% to 40% increase in web page transfer speed, and faster opening of your tabbed windows! Enjoy!

Chennai, April 1.: Google has announced two new services: Gmail Paper for Gmail users; and, Google TiSP for internet users.

Gmail Paper was announced in the Gmail home page. It is a new facility through which one can request paper prints of specific email that one has received. Google will (snail) mail the prints to you. Just choose the messages you want printed out and click the “Paper Archive” button in the menu and allow 2-4 business days for the prints to arrive. Picture attachments are printed on photo-quality paper.

The company is forthright about the revenue model: non-intrusive targeted ads printed on the back of the sheets in red bold 36 pt Helvetica. The messages are printed on eco-friendly paper and the company encourages one to recycle. For more details, please see the Gmail Paper page (http://mail.google.com/mail/help/paper/more.html).

For technophobes who took it seriously and immediately logged in to their accounts to request copies of email (like this correspondent), it was a cruel prank to play: one is disappointed just trying to find the “Paper Archive” button.

The press release says: `For years, data carriers have confronted the "last hundred yards" problem for delivering data from local networks into individual homes. With massive mail boxes and meager attachment limits. Huge File transfers are still an issue. With rapidshare and other hosts having their own issues of time limits, bandwith limits and stuff.

Up-File, is a file upload and share utility that allows you to transfer as good as 1GB of file. Well wats more is it will give you a download link and a delete link, to allow you to pass the download links to your friends and then delete it at convenience. It also allows you to email your uploaded file info to your friends so that you dont have to go thru the hassles of email your friends on putting it on th IM.

It also features file tagging so that you can easily browse thru the files that you are interested in and shared by other users. It also features web hosting, but something it is not known for.

Anyways its a good utility to have a look at.

by default with the operating system. On March 23 2007, a client-side vulnerability allowing for remote code execution in Windows Mail was published on Full Disclosure. The report claims that the vulnerability was successfully tested on a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate.

Microsoft did not confirm the validity of the vulnerability, but it did acknowledge the fact that it is investigating the issue.

“Remote Code Execution is possible if a user clicks on a malicious prepared link. Vistas Mail Client will execute any executable file if a folder exists with the same name.

Despite all the rumors and speculation about a Google Phone, the Web search company is working on software to run services on mobile phones rather than building its own phone, Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray says.

The head of Google in Spain and Portugal confirmed last week that Google is working on a mobile phone, but she gave no details. Google spokespeople in the U.S have refused to provide further comment, except to say: "Mobile is an important area for Google and we remain focused on creating applications and establishing and growing partnerships with industry leaders to develop innovative services for users worldwide. However, we have nothing further to announce."

There have been reports that the Google Phone would be a Blackberry-like device and that Google was partnering with Samsung, and other reports that Google was in talks with France Telecom Group's mobile-telephony division Orange.

Hmm.. I rather doubt how ethical I am on posting this but I just look at it as a means to have some fun testing your company's firewall restrictions

YouTube banned in Turkey

A holding page on YouTube informs users in Turkey that "Access to this site has been denied by court order!"

A court in Istanbul has issued an order denying access to the video-sharing
website YouTube. The state owned Turk Telecom implemented the ban today
after an escalating dispute between Greek and Turkish users of the site.

The court order was issued yesterday and most internet users logging onto the
site in Turkey are met with a holding page with a Turkish message, which
translates as: “Access to this site has been denied by court order ! ...”.

The news has finally arrived, with Microsoft claiming high regards for its new Vista activation feature, this news has sure been a surprise.

With not yet again, people desperate to prove Microsoft wrong, a user proved Vista activation was vulnerable to Brute Force Attacks.
As quoted by PC world magazine
"A user can apparently crack Windows Vista's activation process by applying brute force to come up with valid product keys"
The news caught fire when a website posted a tool yesterday, which actually claimed to work. However its not so easy as it seems. It did apply BruteForce which they claim to extend to billions of years...umm yeah you heard it right (I wonder if nyone would be using it dat long hehehe), even after validating 20000 keys an hour.

So What does Microsoft say about it?
Microsoft's Kochis also downplayed the threat. "Our product activation servers perform a more rigorous analysis of the keys that are sent up for activation than the local key logic does," he said. "Producing keys that will ultimately activate is less likely than just hitting upon one that will pass the local logic."

Will BitTorrents Legit Stand withhold its Users?

With BitTorrent Announcing its legit stand on media, the idea seems quite a fair one. However, with all the assumptions that BitTorrent makes about their forecasts really makes you think otherwise.

Boasting of about 4500 plus titles on their list and with major tie ups with 20th CenturyFox, Lions Gate, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. HomeEntertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios,Inc. (MGM) their library sure seems to rock. Some of these films are even pre-DVD release as according to an article.
That just makes BitTorrent a great resource for legal content.

So whats the Big Issue
Well, BitTorrent talks of 1.5 hundered million users (approx.) who have actually installed the software onto their machines. But, these users primarily uses the p2p for illegitimate content forwarding and how many of those would be willing to go legit and pay for these is still a question

So will the big gamble pay off? I guess its just a matter of time we found out.

However, there are many issues regarding interlinking of nodes, when things get a bit complex, it is just a anamoly for a few words and mostly people will never end up there.

Panama to the rescue!

Project Panama Yahoo's new advertising system has finally come to its rescue in capturing its loosing space in the ads industry. A very delayed release, but it has been rather effective, is really working for it. With Panama now in place, in only its second phase yahoo saw a significant increase in its site ads click-through rates. In an article quoted on Information week

"Yahoo also saw more clicks directed at sponsored search ads, which generate more revenue than algorithmically generated ones. Sponsored clicks represented 10.6% and 11.1% of total click volume in the weeks ending February 11 and February 18, respectively, up from 10.1% during the week of February 4, according to comScore.

Last month, during a conference call detailing Yahoo's Q4 2006 revenue, CEO Terry Semel predicted that Yahoo would see the revenue impact of Project Panama in the second quarter of the year."

Cisco and Apple settle for sharing the trademark "iPhone"

With Cisco already having the trademark for iPhone, it issued a law suit over Apple for using it for their newest product. Apple considered the lawsuit to be "silly" and argued that the term was being used with other products as well.

The six week old battle however came to an end over the settlement that both would share the trademark. No financial details for the settlement, however, were released.

77 routers of Cisco vulnerable

77 routers of Cisco were identified to be vulnerable to the drive-by pharming attack.
This attack was exposed by Symantec last week around.

According to a report by iTWire which quoted "The attack can be launched through malicious code on websites that can reach into your router and modify its settings, exposing you to phishing attempts to get your banking username and password, other login information or other data on your computer – but only if the default username and password haven’t been changed.

Once the username and password have been changed, the drive-by pharming attack won’t work – unless hackers try to use some form of brute force attack to guess your username and password. But for now, that’s more difficult to do or hide"

Vista is Over-Hyped says Torvalds

In a conference recently at linux.conf.au event in Sydney, Torvalds had a few blows on Vista.
Quoting from his statements "I dont think that something like Vista can change how people work, that much. I think it, to some degree, has been over hyped as being something completely differently and new and i dont think it actually is. One of the things we probably would notice is that the hardware requirements are obviously much higher and that could end up helping Linux just because people notice that you can run Linux on machines and have it work very well even on the same machine that could not run Vista at all!". Also he did mention they are facing the greatest of all challenges in capturing the desktop market.

Damn Small Linux - Not

If you thought small is out, at least in Operating Systems, heres just one you should really think otherwise!

Damn Small Linux Not (DSL - N) is an OPERATING SYSTEM that runs from a PenDrive (also runs from a CD). DSL-N is a bare bones operating system. However, the phrase bare bones is just an understatement to the capabilities of this operating system.

Some of the features of this wonderfull baby are:

Boot from from a CD as a live Linux distribution (LiveCD)
Boot from a USB pen drive
Boot from within a host operating system (that's right, it can run *inside* Windows)
Run very nicely from an IDE Compact Flash drive via a method we call "frugal install"
Run fully in RAM
Modularly grow -- DSL-N is highly extendable without the need to customize

The applications in DSL-N were chosen because they are functional, usable, and relatively compact. Unlike DSL, DSL-N has GTK2 applications, that means DSL-N will need more ram and CPU cycles than DSL. To have a pleasant experience, we recommend at least 64MBs and 300MHz.

They also have a DSL edition that is not pleasing to the heart as compared to this darling.
Do not expect too much from this baby as it is not meant to be a PRIMARY operating system. However it is of great use for people on the move and the list may be seemless.

yeah you heard it right and IDE for javascript, css, xml and html, primararily made for ajax enabling websites

How about an IDE, that almost incorporates all the ajax toolkits on the globe and with implementation as good as a drag drop.

Additionally a javascript debugger and easy to work with envioronment
Available in windows, linux and mac platform and also as a plugin to Eclipse

All this sounds wonderfull and too good to be true right!
